Havana Kafé – The first Cuban Cuisine in Medan

Thumbs up for the bravery and courage to open a Cuban Cuisine Café in Medan, it’s a definitely a worth-try concept hey..

Located in small alleyway, Havana Kafé has a rather Spain-ish feel about it, especially the interior. Often you will find people doing photo-shoot here too.. Too bad I didn’t take any picture of that!

But I did take pictures of their food.. 🙂

Empanada de Pollo: Crispy, light, baked Puff Pastry with fragrant yummy chicken filling.. I could have the whole plate by myself! Haha..

Burritos de Pollo: Rice, capsicum, chicken wrapped in a lightly fried tortilla, served with side salads. It might be small, but it is so good!

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

Born in Southern California, you will find The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf stores all over the world. I would say it is one of Starbucks competitor. If you haven’t come across one of its stores, which I highly doubt, The Coffee Bean serves a wide variety of coffee-based beverages, from straight espresso to ice-blended style beverages, tea-based drinks as well as caffeine-free drinks if you prefer..

Here is their Ice Caramel Latte: espresso shots with vanilla powder, caramel sauce and milk poured over ice. Creamy with sweetness of caramel plus the slight bitterness from the coffee. Nyum!

In addition, they also have an extensive food menu, ranging from simple cakes, sandwiches, pies as well as full-on menu (depends on store).

One morning we had their Beef Pie: slow-cooked beef in puff-pastry, which was great! And also Chicken Breakfast Set: comes with egg, side salad, bread and some pulled-chicken, which I thought was OK. Continue reading

Sam’s Bistro & Lounge Medan

One of Medanese’s favorite hangout places, this cozy bistro, or lounge if you like, has great location, great selections of food and drinks, and great service as well.

Personally I’ve been here a couple of times and I like the quality of food they serve. Though I must say, that some of their food portion isn’t up to their price standard.

Here are some of their dishes that I’ve tried:

Spaghetti Aglio Olio, simple dish, tasty.. But a little bit too simple for me to be honest.. It is good as it is, don’t get me wrong, but I would want more flavor and perhaps, some prawns or something similar? 🙂

Spaghetti Milanese: somewhat similar to Bolognese but is less tomato-ey, the sauce is slightly sweet with hints of black pepper. I like this!

Grilled Chicken wit Baked Potato served with Mushroom Sauce: it is what it says, simple, humble, yet delicious! Continue reading

Chapter One Coffee & Cafe Medan

Located at Jl. Teuku Umar / Jl. Airlangga, this double-storey cafe looks amazing from the outside.. It makes you wanna go in and try.. I did, and were not disappointed..

For a start, Avocado Jelly, which costs around Rp 23 000 (if I remember correctly..). It’s a nice blend of avocado and chocolate, topped with jelly, chocolate bits and wafer. Yum!

We also had the new Apple Strudel: sweet pastry topped with cream, cooked apple pieces and strawberries.. So good..!

Seafood Crispy Noodle: Crispy Egg-Noodle (I think they fried it) with sweet-ish sauce.. Not necessarily healthy, but good for a change.. Continue reading

Ichi Dough – CenterPoint Mall Medan

Focusing on “third wave coffee”, you will find this rather newly opened café Ichi Dough fully packed on most weekdays, let alone weekends! We were lucky to have a sit on the bar that night (coz those were the only available seats haha!), but it was nice as you can see the barista works and how good they are at their job!

We tried a few of their dishes and found them really delicious!

We had their BLT (Bacon Lettuce Tomato) Sandwich served with Potato Chips. Simple dish, but they got it right! Also had their Spaghetti Sambal Matah, a clever combination of Western and Indonesian favorite.

Another dish we tried was the classic Fettuccine Carbonara, creamy but rather light, with heaps of mushrooms!  A pleasure for mushroom lover..

Renjiro Sushi Medan

Conveniently located at Complex Multatuli Medan, this japanese resto has been the talk of the town for some time now. Curious, myself and a few friend went to give it a shot.
We ordered a few dishes to share, and ended up very full for the night.. 😄

Teriyaki Chicken Bento Set

First up, Chicken Teriyaki Bento set. Generous portion, with a side salad and side fried chicken dish. It also comes with a miso soup. Taste-wise, it is a typical teriyaki dish, sweet, caramelised, well cooked chicken. Next on the table was Chicken Yakitori stick, which is basically the same as chicken teriyaki..

Italian Wine Pairing Dinner at The Traders Restaurant Medan

I love food and I love wine. So Wine & Dine (ie Wine Pairing Dinner) event is a not-to-be-missed event! Thank you firsthand to The Traders Restaurant as well as PT. Capital Mitra Selaras for collaborating and making the event a success.

First, Malvasia Bianca Salento: A soft, light tasting white wine with both floral and fruity characteristics. Paired with Lobster Medallion with Caviar on bed of crispy salad. Delicioso!

For soup, we were served with Rheindeer Goulyash: curry-like taste soup with venison stew/goulyash. And its perfect accompaniment: Negroamaro Salento, a ruby-red-colored wine with intense notes of red fruits and berries. In addition, this wine has spicy notes and slighty soft, sweet tannins with long finish.

Also, perfect entrée after that hearty goulyash is the Sous-vide of Duck Ballotine served with corriander cream sauce. Yum!
